Banyan Tree Hotels & Resorts is celebrating its 25th Anniversary and Earth Day 2019 with an over 25 percent groupwide reduction of single-use plastic in a year. The Group announced a pledge against single-use plastic in support of the Earth Day 2018 theme End Plastic Pollution. Within a year, this declaration has inspired the change across its 48 hotels worldwide and successfully eliminated 4.2 million single-use plastic items, equating to a significant 26 percent reduction in total usage.

Eighteen Hard Rock International Hotels Participated in Earth Hour

As part as of its ongoing commitment to help “save the planet,” Hard Rock International participated in the worldwide Earth Hour movement—turning off the lights at 18 properties across the globe. As the world clock struck 8:30 p.m. local time on March 30, Hard Rock Hotel guests from China to the West Coast of the United States participated in this symbolic lights-out event. From the participating properties, Hard Rock saved a combined total of 11,400 kilowatts, which would be enough to power more than 50 outdoor concerts.

Frangipani Beach Resort Goes Green with a New 370-Kilowatt Solar Energy System

Anguilla’s Frangipani Beach Resort has announced the completion of a large-scale sustainable energy project to generate clean, reliable power to the hotel. The new solar panels system is projected to power 70 percent of the resort. Featuring 800 photovoltaic (PV) solar panels, the 370 kilowatts (KWh) solar installation will offset a portion of Frangipani Beach Resort’s energy demand, taking up approximately a quarter of an acre of the hotel’s main entrance. In addition, two solar canopies have been added over the resort’s parking structure, which converts sunlight into electricity.

You do not have to look far to find examples of human rights violations by Saudi Arabia. Last year’s killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi Arabia consulate in Istanbul is a recent prominent example. Saudi Arabia’s intervention in the war in Yemen is another example. According to the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project, 56,000 civilians and combatants were killed in Yemen between January 2016 and October 2018. Terrible for such a small nation.

Environmental Media Association Launches Green Seal for Hospitality Program

The lodging industry has a new player in the certification realm—the nonprofit, Beverly Hills, Calif.-based Environmental Media Assn. (EMA). EMA announced last week that it has launched a Green Seal program for hospitality. EMA has had a Green Seal for TV and film production for years. In addition to expanding to hospitality, they have confirmed they will also be venturing into the fitness and fashion categories soon. More than a thousand TV and film productions have earned the Green Seal.
