Celebrating National Chili Day

Marriott on the Move | By Bill Marriott·27 February 2019
Tomorrow is National Chili Day, a great day to celebrate one of my favorite dishes. Chili Con Carne was always a big seller at the restaurant chain my parents, J.W. and Alice Marriott, started in Washington, D.C., in 1927. When they first opened their doors that year, they operated as an A&W Root Beer franchise selling cold drinks for 5 cents each during the summer months. Business was brisk, until the season changed. My parents quickly realized they needed hot food on the menu for the cold winter.

To My Valentine

Marriott on the Move | By Bill Marriott·14 February 2019
I proposed marriage to the love of my life, Donna Garff, by long-distance phone call – if you can believe it – in 1954. I was in Navy Supply School in Athens, Georgia, at the time, just starting my two-year stint as a ship’s supply officer aboard the USS Randolph.

Our Winter Wonderland

Marriott on the Move | By Bill Marriott·30 January 2019
It’s below freezing today in Washington, D.C., which makes it a perfect day for some outdoor ice skating, don’t you think? In the winter of 1958, we covered the swimming pool at the Twin Bridges Motor Hotel and turned it into an ice rink. See the photo above.

Celebrating Twin Bridges' Anniversary

Marriott on the Move | By Bill Marriott·16 January 2019
Today marks the 62nd anniversary of Marriott's shift from the restaurant business to the hotel industry. On this date, January 16, 1957, my parents cut the ribbon on the Twin Bridges Motor Hotel in Arlington, Virginia. See photo above. We were in a hurry to accommodate all the crowds coming...

A Five-Star Review

Marriott on the Move | By Bill Marriott· 7 August 2018
Forbes placed Marriott International on its The World's Most Innovative Companies list in June of this year. What an honor to be recognized. Since my parents started the company in 1927, we've never been afraid to take chances and try new things.

Promoting Women Chefs

Bill Marriott, Arne Sorenson, and chefs Paula DaSilva, Laura Bartholomew, Jennifer O'Brien, Thais Rodriguez, and Ilkay Suuctugu Every quarter, the Marriott International Food and Beverage team pulls together a 'taste' panel with some of our top chefs and senior management.

Lifelong Friendships Forged at Marriott's Great America

Marriott on the Move | By Bill Marriott·11 July 2018
This may come as news to some, but for many years, Marriott International owned and operated two amusement parks, one in California and one in Illinois. We named the parks Marriott's Great America and they were proud tributes to all that is great about this country.

Celebrating Independence Day

Marriott on the Move | By Bill Marriott· 4 July 2018
J. W. "Bill" Marriott Jr. (ca. 1954) Today, as we come together with family and friends to celebrate our Nation's independence, I find myself reflecting on the visionary leadership that was displayed during the Revolutionary War more than two centuries ago.

Breaking Ground on the Next Marriott Chapter

Marriott on the Move | By Bill Marriott· 2 July 2018
Marriott International broke ground recently on its new global corporate headquarters in downtown Bethesda, MD. As I stood there at the ceremony with a hard hat and shovel, I couldn't help but marvel.

A TakeCare Story: Nura Sakati Mendez

Marriott on the Move | By Bill Marriott·13 June 2018
Every so often I get a letter from a customer or an associate that really touches me because of their positive feelings toward Marriott International and our culture.

A Celebration of Associates, Our Family

Marriott on the Move | By Bill Marriott·31 May 2018
All Awards of Excellence Honorees on Stage (May 2018) I'm probably biased, but I really believe that our organization is one big family. That's why my heart was warmed when I recently met Jacqueline Ford, executive assistant at the College Park Marriott in Maryland.

Health, Happiness, and Cheer on Mother's Day

Marriott on the Move | By Bill Marriott· 7 May 2018
I recently came across a poem my mother wrote to me some 37 years ago, which she titled "This Is Your Life, According to Mother." She gave it to me in June 1981 in honor of my 25th year with Marriott International. It recounts, as only a mother could do, her pride at my modest achievements in life.

Grace in Life ... and in Death

Marriott on the Move | By Bill Marriott·18 April 2018
This past week, Barbara Bush taught this country – and the world – one final lesson: how to die with grace. Letting go for someone who loved and enjoyed life so fully could not have been easy. And yet, as she did in life, Barbara Bush, ever the pragmatist, decided that there would be no more hospitalizations, there would instead be time with family, at home.

Striving for Excellence, Always

Marriott on the Move | By Bill Marriott·13 March 2018
I'm often asked why Marriott International has been so successful over the years. I tell them it all harkens back to my father's commitment to taking care of the associates, and his endless striving for excellence at every level of the company. I was reminded of this when I came across a memo from Bill Bailey, who was the district manager of Marriott Inflight Services in Chicago, Illinois, at the time, one of Marriott’s divisions that was sold in 1989, so we could concentrate more fully on our hotels.

The Top Three Things I Look for When Visiting a Hotel

Marriott on the Move | By Bill Marriott· 2 February 2018
It probably goes without saying, but I have visited thousands of hotels. Just this past year, I have seen over 100—and that’s a drop in the bucket compared to my younger days. Touring properties is a passion of mine, not an obligation. I’m often my happiest when I’m at a hotel and spending time with Marriott International associates. And while I would love to spend all my time chatting with them, I’m also there to evaluate the hotel and how it is running. Here’s what I’m looking for:

An Equal Chance for All

Marriott on the Move | By Bill Marriott· 3 January 2018
The Courtyard by Marriott Pune Chakan in India is doing some great work. Earlier this year, the team won our Debbie Marriott Harrison TakeCare Award of Excellence for promoting the wellbeing of their associates and making the hotel a healthier place to work. Recently, they made a video celebrating their diversity, as well as, a program to hire those that were deaf or hard of hearing. This struck a tender spot in my heart because the people in the video – most of who were deaf or hard of hearing – were given a tremendous opportunity to find a job and better their lives.

Taking Care of Our Own

Marriott on the Move | By Bill Marriott·21 December 2017
The holidays are a time for many things, but above all, it’s a time for family. I am fortunate to be spending another Christmas with those I love. On Christmas Eve, we host a big family dinner and on Christmas Day my wife Donna and I go house to house handing out presents to our grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We love it. Communities, just like families, share bonds and traditions. Marriott International encourages our properties and associates to be as involved as they can where we do business. The commitment to helping others has always been core or our culture and has already helped us make a difference for one special family this holiday season.

Doing Good in Every Direction

Marriott on the Move | By Bill Marriott·31 October 2017
I’m of the firm belief that to do something right, you can’t cut corners. I’ve been at that crossroads many times before, but I can confidently say I’ve done my best to do things the right way. This covers anything from maintaining ethical business practices to putting associates first. Personally, I’m particularly proud of Marriott’s efforts to make the world a better place—outside the four walls of our hotels.

All in the Family with Fairfield by Marriott

Marriott on the Move | By Bill Marriott·26 October 2017
Fairfield by Marriott turns 30 this month. In the blink of an eye, I’ve seen the brand evolve from its first property in Atlanta, GA, to nearly 900 hotels around the world, entering new markets like Brazil, China, and Nepal this year. Though a lot has changed, I’m comforted to know that the same ideals the brand was built on—warmth, simplicity and comfort—remain the same values guests experience today.

Lending a Helping Hand

Marriott on the Move | By Bill Marriott·11 September 2017
Hurricane season is hitting hard. Hurricane Irma has made landfall while cleanup is underway in the wake of Harvey. And as the floodwaters start to recede in Houston and other cities in the Gulf Coast, the stories are starting to emerge. Simple acts of kindness can mean the world to someone in need. Marriott International has thousands of associates in the region and nearly 200 of our associates had homes damaged or lost in the storm. But what always amazes me – even in times of personal tragedy – is how our associates and franchisees are able to come together to put others first.

Building a Foundation of Hospitality

Marriott on the Move | By Bill Marriott· 9 August 2017
Five years ago, my family's foundation partnered with San Diego State University to create the China Hospitality Education Initiative, or CHEI. Our idea was to establish relationships with a few Chinese schools and offer hospitality teachers hands-on operational experiences and teaching resources to supplement textbooks.

Marriott's "Boots on the Ground"

Marriott on the Move | By Bill Marriott·26 July 2017
A Snapshot from this Year's Business Council Conference I can't believe it has been almost a year since the close of the Starwood acquisition. I am so proud of all of our associates and our integration teams for all of the hard work that they have done do make this...

Where's Your Happy?

Marriott on the Move | By Bill Marriott·10 July 2017
I recently had the pleasure of doing a fireside chat with my son, David, at a Marriott conference. The theme of our conversation centered on how we promote associate wellbeing through our TakeCare program and where we find our happiness. It’s a simple topic on the surface, but the answer means something different to every person. It may sound cliché, but I really do find my happiness when I’m with associates. It’s why I spend so much of my time traveling from property to property around the world. I love meeting our associates and watching them create memorable experiences for our guests. I’m happiest when our associates can succeed, grow, and be happy.

90 Never Looked So Good

Marriott on the Move | By Bill Marriott·22 May 2017
This month, our company celebrates its 90th anniversary. In 1927, my parents drove east from Salt Lake City with a marriage license in one hand and an A&W franchise license in the other. They set their sights on Washington, D.C., and opened a nine-stool A&W root beer stand on May 20. My parents had an incredible business sense—the hot and muggy capitol city was just the place to sell ice cold, refreshing root beer that summer. Soon the weather turned colder and they needed to change their strategy if they wanted to stay in business. My mother, who majored in Spanish in college, charmed the chef at the Mexican embassy and he taught her how to make hot tamales and chili. They added tamales, chili, hot dogs and burgers to the menu and called their little place The Hot Shoppe.

Marriott's First Lady - A Tribute to My Mother

Marriott on the Move | By Bill Marriott·10 May 2017
My mother was a woman of 'firsts' and her story continues to pave the way for women striving to make an impact as businesswomen and true partners. My mother was a leader in our company and our family - her legacy is unforgettable.

An 'Unusual' Cup of Joe

Marriott on the Move | By Bill Marriott·24 April 2017
If you’ve read my blog before, you know one of the great pleasures of my job is to visit our properties and associates. It’s something my father loved to do, too. He taught me the importance of being seen in the hotel—being present and having a connection with the people who work there. Over the years, I’ve also come to love the uniqueness of each hotel and its location. In a sea of hotels, I love finding out what makes each hotel different and the people who work there special.
